Chapter Twenty-Eight

Willow

Isit quietly as we drive back to the sheriff’s department. Ash is alive.

Ash is alive!

How did this all happen? First I find this place, and then I find my brother …

There’s this weird mix of happiness, fear, joy, and sadness in my gut.

Just a few weeks ago, I was ready to give up. I was literally thinking about throwing myself off a cliff. If Bradley had driven to a place where that could have happened, I don’t know if I’d be here right now.

But now.

I read a quote once that said “Just hang on. Tomorrow is a new day, and with it brings so many possibilities.”

I guess I never really believed it. Until now.

Finding a place like this, with people like Jackson, Raffe, and Miss Maggie. They’re all so wonderful. My mind never could have imagined them. And now my brother is here, too.

Raffe parks, and I notice Petey out of the corner of my eye. He’s waiting with Brody. Each stand like sentinels on one side of the door. I glance over at Jackson’s dad.

“I’m not used to all this.” I point at the two men patiently waiting for me to get out of the truck.

“Well, you better get used to it because you’re going to have a hard time shaking them,” he says, smiling.

Raffe doesn’t look like Jackson, but they have the same charm. It’s not phony. It’s real.

“It’s not every day a girl magically gains so many bodyguards,” I say, trying to keep the moment light.

He laughs. “Come on. Are you ready?”

I give him a confident nod. “Yes.”

This time there’s no crowd bombarding me the minute I step out of the truck. It’s quiet; the only sound is a backup beeper from a nearby construction site.

Petey holds the door open for us, and as I walk by, I pause. Quietly, I ask him a simple question. “They aren’t going to be able to help me, are they?” I point to the deputies standing inside the door.

He shrugs. “Depends on what your idea of justice is.”

I rub my hand over my neck. The deputies look impatient … and bored. A woman dressed in a black tank top is animatedly speaking to them. Her long silver-black hair swings down her back. God, she’s beautiful. Then, it hits me. She has to be related to Billie Rose. They carry the same confidence.

An office door to the left of us opens and Jackson steps out, his eyes instantly finding mine. With one look, I relax. Everything’s going to be okay.

And then my brother steps out behind him.

Ash.

I run, but this time I don’t run away. It takes seconds before I’m jumping into his arms. He picks me up, burying his face in the crook of my neck.

“Willow,” he whispers harshly.

“Ash.”

He holds me close, his arms big and strong. He’s changed so much.

“I never stopped looking for you,” he says, walking us both inside the room he came from.

Jackson gives me a reassuring smile as he closes the door quietly behind us, giving my brother and me a moment alone.
